What solar actually does for you
No numbers on this page, because the honest answer depends on your roof, your tariff and how you use electricity. What follows is how solar earns its place, so you can judge whether that applies to you.
You buy less electricity
Every unit your roof generates and you use is a unit you are not buying from a supplier at the going rate. How much that comes to depends entirely on your system and your usage, which is what the installers quoting you will work through.
You get paid for what you do not use
Whatever your roof generates and you do not use goes back out to the grid, and under the Smart Export Guarantee every large supplier has to offer a tariff that pays you for it. What it pays varies, and your export tariff can come from a different supplier than the one you buy from — so it is worth comparing that too.
You are less exposed to the price of energy
Generating some of what you use puts a part of your supply beyond the reach of the next price cap change. A battery extends that further, by storing what you generate rather than exporting it and buying it back in the evening.
Lower carbon, cleaner supply
Electricity you generate on your own roof is generated without burning anything. It displaces grid electricity at the moment you use it, and any surplus goes to your neighbours through the grid rather than to waste.
A better EPC rating, which buyers see
Solar improves a property’s EPC rating, and that rating is shown to every prospective buyer and tenant by law. What it does to a sale price depends on the property and the market, so we make no claim about it — and you should be wary of anyone who does.
Why compare
One quote is a number. Three is a price.
A single quote tells you what one company charges. It cannot tell you whether that is reasonable, and most people have nothing to check it against.

Not every installer is certified for both
MCS certifies installers per technology, and battery storage has its own competence standard which is not optional from October 2026. This is what an installer has to satisfy before they can receive an enquiry from us.
MCS certification for what they are quoting
An installer certified for solar PV is not automatically certified for battery storage, and the reverse is equally true. If you are being quoted for both, both need checking. We check the specific certification, not just that the badge exists.
BS 7671 Amendment 4, Chapter 57
Published 15 April 2026, this added a chapter covering stationary secondary battery installations. It becomes mandatory for every new UK battery installation on 15 October 2026. We ask installers to confirm they work to it.
A conversation, not a sign-up form
We have spoken to every installer on the panel directly before they joined it. There is no self-service registration, and we are not a directory that lists whoever turns up.
Established businesses
The installers on our panel were established businesses with a trading history before they joined us. We would rather work with a small number of people we have checked than list everyone who asks.

The VAT position changes in 2027
Zero-rated until 31 March 2027
Domestic solar panels and battery storage both currently qualify for 0% VAT as energy-saving materials. HMRC has confirmed the relief runs to 31 March 2027, after which the rate returns to 5%.
What that does and does not mean
It changes the VAT on the installation, nothing else. What you would save on a bill depends on your system, your tariff and how you use electricity, so we make no claim about it and you should treat anyone who does with caution.

How many people will ring me?
The three most suitable — certified for the work you asked about and covering your postcode. We tell them the enquiry is shared with two others, so nobody rings under the impression they have you to themselves, and you end up with three prices to compare.
Why do you need my mobile number?
Because installers quote by phone. Panels depend on your roof and your access; a battery depends on your consumer unit, your meter and where the unit would physically go. We text a code to confirm the number works before anyone gets it.
What does it cost me?
Nothing. Installers pay us for the enquiry. You are not charged, and you are not obliged to accept any quote.
Can I change my mind?
Yes. Email info@comparegreen.co.uk and we will delete your details and tell the installers we passed them to. There is no account to close.
