Why a battery
What a battery actually does
No numbers on this page, because the honest answer depends on your tariff, your usage and your property. What follows is how a battery earns its place, so you can judge whether that applies to you.
Buy electricity when it is cheapest
On a time-of-use tariff the overnight unit rate is a fraction of the peak rate. A battery charges while the rate is low and runs the house on that stored electricity at teatime, when it is not.
Keep the solar you already generate
Without a battery, surplus generation goes back to the grid for whatever your export tariff pays. With one, it stays in the house and gets used in the evening instead of bought back at the full rate.
No solar panels? It still works
A battery does not need panels. On its own it charges from the grid on a cheap overnight rate and discharges through the expensive part of the day. That is a complete product, not a stepping stone to solar.
Power cuts, if you specify it
Some installations can keep part of the house running during an outage, but it depends on the unit and how it is wired, and it is not automatic. If it matters to you, say so early — it changes the quote.

Not every electrician can fit a battery
Battery storage has its own competence standard, and from October 2026 it is not optional. This is what an installer has to satisfy before they can receive an enquiry from us.
MCS certification for battery storage
MCS certifies installers per technology. An installer certified for solar PV is not automatically certified for battery storage. We check the specific certification, not just that the badge exists.
BS 7671 Amendment 4, Chapter 57
Published 15 April 2026, this added a chapter covering stationary secondary battery installations. It becomes mandatory for every new UK battery installation on 15 October 2026. We ask installers to confirm they work to it.
A conversation, not a sign-up form
We have spoken to every installer on the panel directly before they joined it. There is no self-service registration, and we are not a directory that lists whoever turns up.
Established businesses
The installers on our panel were established businesses with a trading history before they joined us. We would rather work with a small number of people we have checked than list everyone who asks.

The VAT position changes in 2027
Zero-rated until 31 March 2027
Domestic battery storage currently qualifies for 0% VAT as an energy-saving material. HMRC has confirmed the relief runs to 31 March 2027, after which the rate returns to 5%.
What that does and does not mean
It changes the VAT on the installation, nothing else. What you would save on a bill depends on your system, your tariff and how you use electricity, so we make no claim about it and you should treat anyone who does with caution.

How many people will ring me?
The three most suitable — certified for the work you asked about and covering your postcode. We tell them the enquiry is shared with two others, so nobody rings under the impression they have you to themselves, and you end up with three prices to compare.
Why do you need my mobile number?
Because installers quote by phone — a battery quote depends on your consumer unit, your meter and where the battery would physically go. We text a code to confirm the number works before anyone gets it.
What does it cost me?
Nothing. Installers pay us for the enquiry. You are not charged, and you are not obliged to accept any quote.
Can I change my mind?
Yes. Email info@comparegreen.co.uk and we will delete your details and tell the installers we passed them to. There is no account to close.
